Levi Is Reading

Levi learned his ABCs, then his sounds, short and long vowels, and then put it all together

June 2006 -- Around February, Levi started reading "Level 1" books.  Most of the words were 3-4 letter words with short vowel sounds only.  About a month later, he added the long vowel sounds after discovering the "silent e."  He had some help from a zoo ABCs video, a series of books, and two Leap Frog videos.  Now, at 3 1/2, he can read many words with little help.  Recently he read "Thank you for shopping with us," and "dressing rooms."  In a couple of stores.

He is starting to learn to work backwards and spell words now.  For example, when I fixed him a cup of cherry juice and asked if he could spell juice, he sounded it out slowly, telling me the letters as he said each sound " j - o - o - s. "  And of course, that's right, isn't it.  I was quite proud of him, and asked him to spell moon, broom, and baboon...he got those right!

Even though he is progressing quickly with reading, he doesn't enjoy sitting down to read a book.  He's more content to read signs while we are out.  Monday, he told the dentist that the sign said "Exit."  And we did, with no cavities!
